Sometimes I think there is more to Camariñas, capital of Galician lace: a living history than it seems. That’s why I sat down to write it out slowly.
Spain has a surprising variety of traditions. Each area went its own way If you fancy, I’ll leave Navarrese lace.
If you travel, look for the local lace museum, if there is one. You’ll be in for a surprise.
The tradition there¶
- Documented since the late 17th century.
- Economic pillar of many families while men worked at sea.
- The Mostra do Encaixe at Easter is Spain’s largest lace event.
What makes it unique¶
- Galician “ñudiño”: extremely fine characteristic stitch.
- Raw, undyed linen with extra-fine threads.
- Floral and geometric patterns transmitted orally.
